The time magazine cover “Defending Australia”, I feel, represents that Australia is a country that’s come into its own, that’s ready to stand up and face the problem head on and fight for our rights and freedoms. On the cover Sir Federick Shedden appears next to a kangaroo lined up as though they are soldiers preparing for battle. They are unmoving, determine, and focused as the storm approaches.
I thought the thriftier ‘Rationing Commission 1942-1950’ was interesting as it represented poorer times in Australian culture and makes you realise how many things were in short supply. Practical tips on household management, recipes, paper patterns and guidance on avoiding ‘waste, gossip and panic’ were issued. This represents Australians as a nation that’s adaptable to world and environmental issues.

‘Gloves off’ by Ralph Heimans represents the strong will within Australian’s to stand up for what we believe in. It tells of our nations struggle with environmental issues like urban development and even natural disaster. The colour, tone and movement within the painting expresses, not only the sitters passion but the artists emotions towards the cause, creating a welcoming invitation for anyone to take up the sitters cause.
‘Rupert Murdoch 2005’ by Ben Barker represents the power and humility of the individual. Barker not only portrays Murdoch as a powerful business man with the world at his feel, but as human being, an everyday man. He lacks the stiff, uptight manner of the business world and becomes more approachable and comfortable with himself and the environment or ‘easy going’.

two of my favourite art works were Mike Parr's Polished Mud and Trent Parke's photo Today Cold Water George Street. Parr's work is very self reflective and represents his inner struggle as a person and as an artist. i like his rough, hard sketch quality within his work. Parke's work captured my attention because it portrayed George Street as a quite almost brooding place where you can easily get lost i the darkness. Where with my experiences you're more likey to get trampled to death by the hundreds of people moving around the busy, well lit street.
